First up, if you are using Instagram for pics of your food and cute doggy photos, you don’t have to read this. 😉 However if you are trying to grow your brand or business, here’s a few reasons why you should upgrade to an Instagram business profile.

Just incase, I though I would mention how to get access to an Instagram business profile. At this point it seems Instagram is rolling out this upgrades in stages, so the check if you have access open the app and click on your profile icon on the bottom right of the screen to access your profile. Hopefully, you see this message :
If you do, and you want to grow your account or learn more about your followers, then switch. Sometime you may not see it, if thats the case click the gear icon on the top to view your profile options, and then scroll down to the Account section. If you see the option “Switch to Business Profile,” you have access to the business profile. If you don’t see either, come back later and keep trying.
With this new profile, Instagram has finally given us more data on the performance of our content, before this we would have to use some third party tool we hoped was accurate and get the stats. although, not as informative as Facebook or Pinterest business data, it still gives you some insights into whats working, when it works and how many people you have reached.
Lets take a look at what will be available to you once you upgrade to an Instagram Business profile.
Being contactable or found :
Once you have switched, you can add your contact details. users will then be able to click the button and see options to get directions or call you. Clicking get directions will show your location on a map. Personal preference, I’ve just said London for now – can’t be dealing with millions of fans outside my office. ;-).
When users click call, it does just that. This is a great way for business to have another contact point. For instance a restaurant may have loads of images of their amazing food, now instead of finding their website and contact details to book, you simply click that button straight from Instagram. It helps remove steps.

Finally Instagram is giving us direct access to insights through the Instagram Business profile. In the past we would have to rely on third part tools or a spreadsheet to work out performcane. although not as rich as Facebook insights or Pinterest Business data there are still some helpful insights to help you with your Instagram channels.
Metrics and data available :
Impressions : this shows the total amount of times your posts have been seen
Reach : the number of unique accounts that have seen your posts.
Website clicks : On the top of your profile you should have your own link, this will tell you how many times that has been clicked
Follower demographics : Now you can see the male / female split, age groups, locations for users interacting with your posts
Post details : You can look at the data related to individual posts as well
Time of day : there’s a handy graph showing when your followers are engaging with your posts
Top posts : Now in one quick look you can see which posts are performing the best.
Up till now, you could only create Instagram promotions in Facebook Ad Manager. Now you can do it directly from your account. Click on one of your images and you will see a link to promote. From here you have the targeting and budget options. Now you can promote instagram posts directly from your account Click To Tweet
I highly recommend you make the switch now. You can still post as normal, however you will have insights into whats working and be able to use that to plan the sort of content your channel is broadcasting. Plus having the data on your followers, especially time of day performance will help you change your content plan around to fit those users. Also, having quick access to paid promotion within the app will allow you to quickly boost images you want to use to achieve your campaign goals, and increase your following with targeted users. This is all especially important seeing as Instagram has rolled out its algorithm, now you have some insights to help work towards it.
Let me know your thoughts below in the comments. Have you switched? Are you using the data to plan content?
